it's kinda boring...'til you wrap your brain around what it is. a supersonic combustion engine.

in all traditional jet engines, the internal airflow must be lower than the speed of sound even for super-fast stuff.

they've been working on supersonic combustion engines for a long time and in the last few years, have made serious progress. supersonic combustion is critical to being able to fly at hypersonic speeds w/o rocket propulsion. hypersonic flight is the next wave for high-speed military applications.

sustaining supersonic combustion is, shall we way, a bit difficult. it's been likened to firing up a butane cigarette lighter, and keeping it lit, while standing in a tornado.

in the last couple of years, they've built some ground based prototypes that generate positive thrust and have actually flown simple test vehicles that generate hypersonic data while producing thrust for a handful of seconds.

i think this year or next they're readying the next generation of flying test-beds that will sustain hypersonic flight for a bit longer. these test vehicles are dropped from a B52 on the top of a rocket just to get them going fast enough to even start the scramjet...this stuff is not easy!
