when I worked for a living I used to hang out at our local Tinderbox cigar shop near the capitol building. Spent allot of money at that place, on me and on clients. The owner's name is Mark and we've become really good friends over the years. He's putting together a new website and wanted me to take some candid shots of his product, primarily Davidoff cigars, since he's only one of a handful of authorized dealers for Davidoff in PA. Used the Nikon D90 and 35/1.8G for all the shots. Most were indirectly lit with my Nikon SB600 Speedlight. Only needs about 3 or 4 images. See what ya' think!!

My payment was a box of Davidoffs, my choice!! I took a box of Special R's...:HUGE GRIN:

Not bad at all Mike. I only wish he would have removed the prices so that these pics won't go out of date when he inevitably has to raise the tariffs.

good point! I pointed that out and he said it's a non-issue. Those are the most expensive cigars on the planet. The guys who buy 'em could care less...

I really like the way this one came out...

The rest, you obviously shot with the lens wide open, and your depth of field is too shallow for product shots. To much of the merchandise is out of focus. They would have looked much better with a higher f-stop. After all, you were using a flash.

I prefer the first shot. Typical to what food stylists do with DOF...

Food shouldn't have writing on it, which exaggerates the blurriness. ;)

the owner of the shop, Mark, was telling me that Davidoff is the Rolex of the cigar industry, worldwide. They have a very limited number of AD's and if they find an AD selling product to other independent shops, there goes their contract. They operate just like Rolex (audits, sales goals, no commingling with other products, etc.) and nobody gets a second chance if they break any rules of agreement...

I suspect Pat would have used a higher f-stop and a tripod. ;)

For some shots yes but I doubt they would have turned out better.

Ummm...isn't every shot of an inanimate object candid?!?!?! After all it's not like the fucking things are gonna start dancing around :)

Slugo

only from a fuckin' lawyer!! :) Maybe I should have used the term, 'static display' - but then inanimate objects don't move unless thrown directly at the lawyer's head!!! ;)

reminds me of Jakob Klein, who chewed Swisher Sweets (2 for 5 cents in 1959) and kept a rubber catherter in the sweat stained silk band of his ever present dunned colored Palm Beach hat. He had the scars in this uthera from a bout of syphlis in the 1930's (a gift from a whore in Harlem), and had to use the catheter to piss.

Everything connected with tobacco is uterly disgusting to me

Ask for feedback, then be prepared to hear the truth. I probably wouldn't have said anything but "nice" had he not asked.

Then again.....:HUGE GRIN:

Posting photos can be a learning experience or a circle jerk. Constructive criticism can be a good thing. I didn't just tell Slugo I didn't like his pics, I told him what I didn't like about them and how to make them better. Seems he'd already done that too, but just didn't appreciate the practicality of the alternate shots, because he was looking at them from an artistic POV.
