View Full Version : Anyone have a good suggestion for Scotch?

I read a similar thread about good bottom shelf booze but I was wondering more specifically on Scotch. Either single malt or blended.....Anyone have a brand that is fairly reasonably priced (under $50 a bottle)? Macallan is great but I was looking for something a little more "off the beaten path"

Hi, and welcome to WWC.

There are a lot of good choices in that price range. You might try Balvenie Double Wood, it's one of my favorites. Dalmore is pretty good as well. If you're looking for something more peaty then Lagavulin or Laphroaig are the obvious choices though they're not for everyone....people seem to either love or hate them.

A good place to do some research is at Dr. Whisky (http://drwhisky.blogspot.com/).

I had to go to three liquor stores before finding it at Hillwood Liquors on Charlotte Pike, but I was able to track down a bottle of Highland Park, 12 yr old for about $45.

Excellent, excellent SMS. ;)

And welcome aboard, Derek. ;)

At Scott's recommendation I tried it and it is very good...still have to give the nod to the Glenrothes though ;)

In that price range I like the Glenrothes Select Reserve best, about $45/fifth...next would be the Highland Park 12 and the Balvenie Doublewoods 12 (sorry Unc, tipped a bit)...also the Bowmore Legend (10 year) is a very nice Islay SMS at about $25/bottle...a bit rougher around the edges than the others but let the ice melt and you will be pleasantly surprised :)

I guess I won't be trying any of that then. :) I just can't bring myself to put ice in scotch....I don't even like to cut it with water.

I have tried the Bowmore Darkest and I can't say I'm super fond of it.

Tennessee really fucks you with liquor taxes. The liquor lobby also has an apparent stranglehold on the State legislature to prevent any competition on prices too. Right now we're fighting for wine to be sold in supermarkets, but I doubt it'll pass.

Based on Ted's example for Highland Park, add about $10 here above PA prices.
